Combining stories and data: learning from the SenseMaker tool and approach

Jun 8, 2022, 3:00 – 4:30 PM

Stories and data offer different ways of learning about our communities and communicating our work. Whilst they often operate at opposite ends of a 'qualitative vs quantitative' spectrum, this session will explore how they can be combined. We'll introduce SenseMaker, a tool for integrating stories with data, and consider how we might employ these methods in our own work.

About this event

Stories and data offer different ways of learning about our communities and communicating our work. Whilst they can be viewed as operating at the opposite ends of a 'qualitative vs quantitative' spectrum, this session will explore how they can be combined to deliver improved understanding; and used to guide next steps.

We will explore how SenseMaker®–one tool which integrates stories with data, was used on a citizen engagement, community development project in the Welsh Valleys. Beth Smith from The CynefinCo will discuss how Sensemaker was used to help the community explore and understand key local issues and create new ways of addressing them.

The session will consist of a short presentation on the case study followed by an opportunity to discuss the approach; and to share experiences on ways of engaging communities and gathering community views and ideas.

This session will be online via Zoom.
