The decentralized web (DWeb*) is the product of a technological movement that aims to distribute the internet (including data and applications) across a network of connected devices as opposed to large, centrally controlled entities.

The current, centralized version of the web allows a few big companies to control its infrastructure and provide the rules that govern our interactions and experiences. DWeb proponents say that removing central control of the internet allows for distributed power and gives individual users more control over how they interact across the system. DWeb technology can be particularly valuable if this underlying ethos resonates with your organization’s mission.

But what does the Dweb look like in practice? In this special event, Nathan Freitas of the Guardian Project shows how a decentralized approach has enabled his team to create easy-to-use and secure apps that enable activists to protect their communications and personal data from unjust intrusion, interception, and monitoring.

The Guardian Project has developed ProofMode: Verified Witnessing, which is being used to document war crimes. The app turns photos and videos into secure visual evidence that protects against alternations and the creation of fake photos. The app can be used by activists, journalists or humanitarian organizations looking to safeguard their work in this age of perilous global communication.

Join us to learn how decentralized solutions — including those from The Guardian Project and more — can empower civil society to better serve communities around the world.

**Also known as Web 3.0 or Web3.
